HAPPY BIRTHDAY Grandpa!!!

today is my grandpa's birthday! he's 95 years young. i wish i could be there to celebrate with him. i don't know to much about my past but i do know the nuts and bolts of our family history. someday i hope my grandpa can record stories that we'll never know about.

my grandpa came over from italy with his mom and dad and brother don. i believe they came with some other friends from the same area of northern italy. when they reached washington they lived on the east side of the mountains for a little while in cle elum. the story i was told from this time was that my uncle don was the delivery boy for the bakery in town. this meant he would strap on his roller skates to travel between stores. how fun!

they later moved to the central district in seattle. he was in the navy in the world war. after leaving the service he began his career with the us postal service. there he worked until meeting their retirement age. not one to settle down, grandpa then began his second career with the city health department. this part i remember the most. we were about grade school age when i can remember him coming over for lunch in the little white city car with the black city logo on the side. and the stories of local places we would eat at about how they didn't properly refrigerate stuff were so entertaining to my brother and i.

after retiring from the city grandpa became very active in the local italian club, bocce clubs and retirement positions from his earlier jobs. we would go to their special holiday parties and visit with santa or to festa italiano at the center. watching my grandpa make gnocchi from scratch was the coolest thing! it's my favorite pasta and it's rarely good in a restaurant. to find out grandpa could make it the real way with flour eggs and potatoes was the best treat.

i love you grandpa and wish you a very happy birthday!

on another note--
i got an email from my brother, who some may remember is on his european vacation with a couple friends. last nite he was camping by the mediterranean in southern spain. to quote him "the water is awesome you can totally float without moving". how cool!
