checkin in...

still alive. not too much going on here the past couple weeks. job searching in a city with no jobs. even if it took a couple months down south to find a job, at least many jobs are advertised daily & i can get interviews. here there's just no jobs advertised.
kelly temp hasn't been busy either. my last job with them was in September, so i've been trying on my own the past month.

fun gifts...

even though we were a lot lower key for xmas this year than in years past, i still managed to rack up quite a nice cache of goodies-a helmet & padded shorts for skiing. N & my bro also got some great things. there are a couple pics below. i decided NOT to blog on xmas, not sure why..fighting the man?

it was really nice to have a fun holiday after getting my f-off letter from  my latest interview. i'm also really thankful for Kelly Services hiring me back & getting me/keeping me working pretty steadily for the past couple months. i know the more jobs i can do, the more i can get with them. the girls that work there are really nice & supportive of me. N got a gig with Kelly starting tomorrow. So happy & excited for him!

Xtreme Bean Coffee ... it's DeLisch

one treat we usually get when we head into town on errands is coffee from Xtreme Bean. it's in Nugents Corner [which is now a roundabout]. we have been going here since July when we moved. the people that work there are super nice. they know our drinks, which is always a nice treat. they also carry they OatrRageous Bars from the Lynden Bakery i'm addicted to.

i get a mocha & N goes for the double latte. they have a drive-thru we use every time [since the espresso machine is back there, it's quicker then going in & warmer this time of year :)]. the coffee they use is Fildago Bay. they have sandwiches & bagels that i'm sure are just as good as the coffee!

if you're out this way, definately stop in.

Five Guys Burger & Fries...

we tried out 5 guys up here the other day. they had recently opened up a couple places in HB when we were still there, but never tried them.

maybe it's because i'm was spoiled on In&Out & Fatburger.. that they weren't that good, to me. when you walk it, it just struck me as mimicking the In&Out style..but without all the grilled onion smells. they offer a ton of toppings, but sometimes that can get in the way of the burger flavor.

ShooFly Pie bakery...

last weekend friends we've known since childhood came up to check out the ranch and watch the Seahawks(lose). it was a great time by all. they brought up these DELISHious pies from a new bakery in West Seattle. i checked the website & they are all made fresh with no preservatives.

if we're ever in WS, this will be added to the stops. they have a bacon & mac n cheese pie!

this is what the pies looked like the morning after their visit..then i finished the apple.

Hungry Bear, Deming Wa

our closest "diner" is the Hungry Bear, right before the Nooksack Casino. we've been a few times now. their french toast is amazing & the standard "shredded" hashbrowns are cooked the best i've ever had! the waitress we usually have is super nice & sarcastic. the only 2 bummers are..they are only open until 2pm & they don't serve the french toast after 11am.
the atmosphere is super relaxed & casual. bathroom is nice & clean..there's even a picnic table outside you could eat at if you want a la picnic style.

with the limits on their hours & food items, it does make it more a a treat to go there to eat.
highly recommend!

Boomers Drive-In Bellingham

the eat-out-fest of Bham has continued successfully. we went to Boomers this past week. they are similar to Sonic in that youcan drive up & order from your car, but you can also go inside. they've been around up here for ever.
they are ok. we got the baby boomer w/cheese. i do prefer Wins or Morrie's [at this point]. it does take a while to order/get food if they have more than a couple cars ordering. still, always fun to eat in your car & not have to get up.. laziness at it's best ;)

Bham eating out continued..Morrie's Drive-In

we had never stopped at this place last time we lived here. when we went to Q&M's house a couple weeks ago, we passed it again. i started craving it..any drive-in, hamburger "dive" eat place is something i need to try. usually you get a good burger & the prices are way more affordable than "sit down" dining. the people that work at the smaller joints are usually more customer friendly & keep the places super clean.

Morrie's was a great stop for a quick, cheap bite! only thing i didn't realize- the delux cheeseburger didn't have onions. i must me becoming an onionhead..i did miss that. they have shakes to try next time.

Rudy's Pizzeria, Bellingham WA...

we finally got to my favorite pizza place (click to see their website) in Bellingham this week. i was very excited when i was ordering, possibly scaring the cashier, but she was nice. N got 2 slices-cheese & veggie (made with no mushrooms), $2.50 each. i got their DELICIOUS white pizza, minus the basil leaves. we also got the breadsticks w/wine marinara sauce. i totally spazzed & ordered it without cheese. it had been so long, i thought that's how we'd gotten it in the past. i was wrong. i missed the cheese..but all the more for the next times!

anyone that comes to visit, i'd be more than happy to take you. it is SO MUCH better than the hippie-pretentious North Fork.

7/15/11

North Fork Brewery..The Woods..Pepperdock..

we had dinner at the North Fork today. i'd been there a few times last time we lived up here. N loves it. the pizza is super thin. it was ok, but the sauce was a little sweet tasting or me. next we'll try Rudy's downtown. i loved their white pizza before, i hope its the same!

we also found the best coffee drive-thru. The Woods. they have a few locations. they make their mochas nice & chocolate for me-without asking for an extra shot of chocolate. N enjoyed his latte a lot [don't compare to Portola of course :)]

on thursday we went to West Seattle for lunch with my mom. it was crazy how many of my old favorite places to eat were gone..& the amount of new places that had popped up, just in the 3 blocks of alaska junction alone! maddness..what i wouldn't give for a Bison Creek Pizza or Snubby's sandwich right now.

7/12/11

fire..fire @ the ranch..

we've had a couple fires in the pit so far, i love them-the heat & to poke the fire with my pokein stick whiile toastin up smores. another awesome treat to living here is gerty meat. she is a local lady who sells meat cuts direct. the sausages are even gout-ok for my brother. her ground meat melts in your mouth. the bacon though...mmm... bacon...is to die for.

past week of making the eatin rounds in HB...

we've been eating a lot last week-- all our favorite treats..
white pizza from NY Upper Crust, Sidestreet Cafe, Portola Coffee Lab, In&Out, Sonic, Tom's Place, Norms, China Garden- Dim Sum, Pedros, Miss Priss Cupcakes..

we've also done some "sight seeing". took some pictures of stuff we'll miss in the area.
below for your amusement :)

Snapshot Saturday...

we went back to Portola Coffee Lab today. i got a mocha this time which they make with gnache. it was excellent. we learned when they are busy they give everyone togo cups. next time we'll make sure & tell them it's for there, since it's so much better in the coffee mugs they have.

we were there during the farmers market. a nice surprise were the food trucks there. they are different each week. this time they had seafood, bakery, sushi, pho-sandwiches & bbq. i went for the bbq, after a debate with myself for seafood..but there's always a next time.

N also got some veggies, a larger cheese tamale & pita bread w/mozzarella balls & fresh taboulie (parsley, lemon juice, onions).

Portola Coffee Lab...

down here it has been hard to find a good, consistent coffee place. we have Kean & Mr. P's, but nothing like the choices in washington.

after filling our car with load 4 of goodwill drop offs, we went on a mission. N had been on yelp this am, doing some reviews & looking for coffee (par for the course :)). he found this place where the reviews described it as "as good as Italy" with a rare 5 out of 5 stars & called to see if it was open (being memorial day). the # went to a corporate message (not sure if it was the same # as listed below) & didn't give any info on open/closed. he mapped it & since it was pretty close by, we decided to check it out after our latest drop off.

first we discovered this brand new "mall". it was about half full, mostly home furnishing type stores & a paul mitchell school. some buildings had connected outdoor walkways between them. it was really clean & empty. we drove the lot & found the right building number. we got to check it out & had a nice walk around the OC Mart Mix. they have a farmers market there on saturdays a banner said also. inside was the coffee lab. the space was about 1/3 full of vendors with small "offices" for showing their work (interior designers, dress & jewelry designers..ect). there is a big open section with an intimate couch setting, a giant "family style" table or you could go outdoors (other than sitting in the coffee lab section).

the prices are about $2.50 - $3.50, super cheap. they make the coffee in beakers right in front of you. i went with a basic cap to test it & N had his latte. it was sooo good! no burn or bitter taste & the creme...OMG. N's was so smooth it almost tasted like a mocha. when you took a sip or each together, it was a perfect balance. i wish J was here to get a real opinion of the Italian comparison. we will be going back weekly. next i'm getting a mocha.

Welcome Eben Michael Persing & some good eats

Mike & Elisha had their first baby, a BOY yesterday 3/5/11. so exciting! he'll join Meeko cat & Rasta dog, along with mom & dad. we can't wait to meet him!

i had some pictures to share a whole ago, but just found them on my phone today. lunch at Tom's Place & a treat from IKEA. a favorite blogger of mine lives in belgium (other than J&S). she had mentioned this candy brand a little while ago. i saw some at IKEA and picked up a pack. i'm not a big chocolate fan but i do enjoy these. the carmel bits inside keep it perfectly balances. thanks belgian waffle!

no "storm" in socal today..haven gastropub & old towne orange

we have intended to go for N's bday the beginning of the month, but with his flu sickness & finances we finally got the chance to go today. i love yelp. we did our research online before going. [eating out for more than $30 is a BIG deal for us poor folks, which is the reason we picked lunchtime instead of dinner also] we reviewed the menu online, read the reviews on yelp then decided on an appetizer & lunch plate to split. since i'm no big eater this was the perfect amount of food. we were going to get a dessert, but then i read about a belgium waffel place on the other side of the circle we decided to try later after antiquing. did i mention the restaurant is in Old Towne Orange, antique shopping center of the OC.

after a nice lunch, though a little chilly since we were next to the door & right behind the hostess podium. they had some cool seating in their front window. 3 individual booths that stepped up from the floor so you could view the room. the room itself was open with the bar on the opposite wall. i can definitely see it being loud if it was busy. the bathroom was nice & warm. i forgot to order the hot water mug trick C taught me so i went back to run some hot water over my hands & it was heated! N was wondering since i was gone a little longer than usual..but there wasn't a line so why not warm up?

then we went off to shop. walked down the the waffel stand. it was so crowded since it's a walk-up deal. with the cold wind blowing, sore feet & line, i decided the wait wasn't worth it. maybe some other time, but seeing the long line was a positive for a second try.

what did we get? i got 4 more golden books i used to have growing up - christmas themed. i also got 3 of the Happy Hollister childrens books. they were one of my most favorite series when i was in grade school. hopefully someday i can share them with Bronwen or Alex or others when they come over. spent about $40 on paper products, i'm a sucker for my personal nostalgia.

N got 2 boxes of mini-baseball cards [full sets] & a GI Joe figure holder case. i found it for him & it was only $10 so i knew, even if he didn't want it with the shape it was in it would sell for more on ebay no sweat, but he liked it.
